History
St.George Orthodox Church is a parish under the American Diocese of the Indian Malankara Orthodox Church. Christianity has been in existence in India from the beginning of the Christian era. St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, is the founder of the ancient church in India. It is believed that St.Thomas arrived in Cranganore, Kerala, India, in 52 A.D. He preached the gospel and established churches in several places.
St.George Orthodox Church currently has about 73 member families coming together to worship our Lord Jesus Christ in the rich & orthodox traditions put together by our fathers.
In the beginning our parish had to go through some tough times. According to the Malankara Orthodox Church traditions the continuance of a church is based on the solidarity & stability of the building where the worship is conducted. Keeping that faith, some members continued to worship in the same building. By the permission of the former diocesan metropolitan, His Grace Thomas Mar Makarios, a new name ST. GEORGE MALANKARA ORTHODOX CHURCH was adopted. In 1989 Rev.Fr.E.M.Philip was the first vicar of this parish.
We are thankful to former Diocesan Metropolitan His Grace Thomas Mar Makarios, present Diocesan Metropolitan of America His Grace Mathews Mar Barnabas, Assistant Metropolitan H.G.Zachariah Mar Nicholovas, former vicars Rev.Fr.E.M.Philip, Rev.Fr.Thomas Kurian, Rev.Fr.M.T.Thomas, Rev.Fr.M.Zachariah, devoted trustees, secretaries and managing committee members of this parish.
All the spiritual organizations i.e. Sunday school, M.G.O.C.SM & Youth, F.O.C.U.S,Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam and St.George Prayer fellowship are very active & give continuous source of inspiration & strength to our church.
In 1998 we purchased 2.26 Acres of land, and the new church was built and consecrated in 2006.
Our Church foundation stone was laid by the late Catholicos, His Holiness Baselios Marthoma Mathews II in 1998 and consecrated by Catholicos, His Holiness Baselios Marthma Didymus I. with the presence of H.G.Mathews Mar Barnabas Metropolitan and H.G.Zacharia Mar Nicolovos (former Metropolitans of American Diocese).
